Levofloxacin is a strong antibiotic that works by killing bacteria and stopping them from multiplying in your body. It belongs to the fluoroquinolone family of antibiotics and is used when common antibiotics may not be strong enough.

The usual adult dose is one 500mg tablet once a day, swallowed whole with a full glass of water. You can take it with or without food, but try to take it at the same time each day. Do not take it together with milk, yoghurt, or antacids — wait at least 2 hours between them. Your doctor will tell you how many days to use it, usually 5 to 14 days depending on your infection. Always complete the full course even if you feel better.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take two tablets at once to make up for the missed dose.

Do not take levofloxacin with antacids like aluminium or magnesium hydroxide, or with iron supplements — they block the drug from working properly (space them at least 2 hours apart). Avoid taking it with blood thinners like warfarin as it can increase the risk of bleeding. Avoid alcohol while on this medication as it can worsen dizziness and side effects.

Levofloxacin is NOT safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding — it can harm the unborn baby and pass into breast milk, so always tell your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to conceive, or nursing.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so do not leave it in your car or near a window. Keep in the original pack and away from moisture. Always keep out of reach of children.
