Adults should take 1 to 2 tablets (500mg each) every 4 to 6 hours when needed for pain or fever. Do not take more than 8 tablets (4,000mg) in 24 hours. You can take it with or without food, but taking it with water is important. If it upsets your stomach, take it with a little food.
Since paracetamol is usually taken only when you need it for pain or fever, there is no strict schedule. If you are taking it regularly and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember — but if it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Never take a double dose to make up for it.
Do not take more than the recommended dose — paracetamol overdose is very dangerous to your liver and can be fatal even if you feel fine at first. Buy only from reputable pharmacies and check the NAFDAC number — avoid buying from roadside sellers or bus hawkers as fake paracetamol is common in Nigeria. Many combination drugs (like cold remedies and malaria treatments) already contain paracetamol, so check the ingredients to avoid accidentally doubling up.
Avoid drinking alcohol while taking paracetamol as both can damage your liver together. Be careful if you are also taking warfarin (a blood thinner) as paracetamol can increase its effect. Check other medicines you are taking (like cold and flu remedies) because many already contain paracetamol — taking them together can lead to an overdose without you knowing.
