Adults usually take 50 mg to 100 mg every 4 to 6 hours when needed for pain, but do not take more than 400 mg in a day. Swallow capsules whole with water — you can take it with or without food, but taking it with food may reduce stomach upset. Do not crush or chew sustained-release tablets like Amadol Retard.
If you are taking tramadol on a regular schedule and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one — never double up to make up for it.
Tramadol is widely abused in Nigeria — only use it as prescribed by a doctor and never share it with others. Do not buy tramadol from roadside vendors or unauthorized sellers, as fake and substandard versions are common and dangerous. It can be habit-forming, so do not take it longer or in higher doses than your doctor prescribed.
Do not mix tramadol with alcohol — it can dangerously slow your breathing and make you extremely drowsy. Avoid taking it with other sleeping pills, sedatives, or drugs like diazepam (Valium). Do not combine with antidepressants like amitriptyline or SSRIs, as this can cause a dangerous condition called serotonin syndrome (where too much of a brain chemical builds up, causing confusion, fast heartbeat, and muscle stiffness).
