How it works

Inhibits HIV integrase enzyme, preventing integration of viral DNA into the host genome; abacavir and lamivudine are nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors that block reverse transcriptase enzyme, preventing conversion of viral RNA to DNA and subsequent viral replication.

How to take this drug

Take one tablet once a day, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time every day so it becomes a habit. Do not crush or break the tablet — swallow it whole with water.

What if I Miss a Dose?

If you remember within a few hours, take it as soon as you can. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Never take two tablets at once to make up for a missed dose.

What to watch out for

Always get your HIV medicines from a licensed pharmacy or your treatment centre — never buy from roadside sellers or unverified sources as fake drugs are common. Never stop taking this medicine on your own or share it with anyone, even if they also have HIV. Keep all your clinic appointments and do your viral load tests as scheduled so your doctor can confirm the medicine is working.

Serious Side Effects

Severe allergic reaction to Abacavir — symptoms include fever
rash
nausea
vomiting
body pain
and difficulty breathing (this can be life-threatening
stop the drug and go to the hospital immediately). Signs of liver problems such as yellowing of the eyes or dark urine. Unusual muscle pain or weakness
which could signal a rare but serious condition called lactic acidosis.

Drug Interactions

Avoid taking this medicine with Metformin doses above 1000 mg daily (commonly used for diabetes) without your doctor adjusting the dose. Do not take antacids, calcium, or iron supplements within 6 hours before or 2 hours after your dose, as they reduce how well the drug works. Alcohol can worsen liver side effects and should be limited or avoided.

Who Should NOT Take This

Do not take this medicine if you have ever had a serious allergic reaction (hypersensitivity) to Abacavir
Dolutegravir
or Lamivudine. People with moderate or severe liver problems should not use it. Your doctor must test you for a gene called HLA-B*5701 before starting — if you carry this gene
Abacavir can cause a dangerous allergic reaction.

How to Store

Store below 30°C in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Keep the container tightly closed and always out of reach of children. Do not store in the bathroom or near a kitchen window where heat and moisture build up.
