Who is this for?

Cefoperazone/Sulbactam is a combination antibiotic injection that fights bacteria in two ways — Cefoperazone kills the bacteria directly, while Sulbactam stops bacteria from defending themselves against the antibiotic, making the treatment more effective.

Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins and preventing peptidoglycan cross-linking, while sulbactam irreversibly inhibits bacterial beta-lactamase enzymes, preventing antibiotic degradation and extending cefoperazone's spectrum of activity against resistant organisms.

Is Cefoperazone; safe to take with another drug?

This drug is given as an injection into a vein (IV) or muscle (IM) by a nurse or doctor — you cannot take it at home by yourself. The usual adult dose is 1g to 2g given every 12 hours, but your doctor may increase or adjust the dose depending on how serious the infection is. A full course is usually 7 to 14 days.

Since this injection is given by a healthcare professional, missed doses are unlikely. However, if a scheduled dose is missed, it should be given as soon as possible. Do not double the dose to make up for it — let the doctor or nurse decide the best time for the next dose.

• pain or swelling at the injection site
• nausea or vomiting
• mild skin rash
• mild stomach discomfort

Avoid drinking alcohol during treatment and for a few days after, as it can cause severe nausea, vomiting, flushing, and rapid heartbeat (a reaction similar to what happens with some other antibiotics). Blood-thinning drugs like warfarin or heparin may become more potent when combined with this drug, increasing the risk of bleeding. Let your doctor know if you are taking any aminoglycoside antibiotics like gentamicin, as they should not be mixed together in the same drip.

Store the unopened injection powder in a cool, dry place below 25°C — away from direct sunlight and humidity. Once mixed with water for injection, it should be used immediately or within a few hours. Always keep away from children.
