Triamcinolone acetonide is a steroid medication that works by reducing swelling, redness, itching, and allergic reactions in the body — it calms down your immune system when it overreacts.
Binds to glucocorticoid receptors in the cytoplasm, translocating to the nucleus to suppress pro-inflammatory gene expression and inhibit the production of cytokines, chemokines, and adhesion molecules. This action suppresses T-cell proliferation, reduces vasodilation and vascular permeability, and decreases infiltration of inflammatory cells to affected tissues.

This drug comes in many forms — cream, ointment, injection, nasal spray, and mouth paste. For the mouth paste (like Kanalog in Orabase), press a small amount onto the sore area in your mouth at bedtime or 2-3 times daily after meals. For skin creams, apply a thin layer to the affected area 2-3 times daily. For injections, only a doctor or nurse should give it. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions.
