Who is this for?

Topiramate is a medicine that calms down overactive electrical signals in the brain, helping to prevent seizures (convulsions) and reduce the frequency of severe headaches (migraines).

Inhibits neuronal sodium channels and enhances gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) activity at GABA-A receptors, thereby reducing neuronal excitability and preventing seizure propagation.

Is Topiramate safe to take with another drug?

For epilepsy, adults usually start with 25 mg taken once daily at night, then the doctor gradually increases the dose over several weeks up to 200–400 mg daily split into two doses. For migraine prevention, the target dose is usually 50–100 mg daily in two divided doses. You can take it with or without food, but swallow the tablet whole with plenty of water. Do not crush or chew it.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Never take a double dose to make up for it.

Avoid alcohol — it can make the drowsiness and dizziness from topiramate much worse. If you are taking birth control pills, topiramate can make them less effective, so discuss alternative contraception with your doctor. Taking topiramate with other seizure medicines like carbamazepine or valproate may need dose adjustments by your doctor.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it in cars or near windows. Keep the container tightly closed and always out of the reach of children.
