Silodosin is a medicine that relaxes the muscles around the prostate gland and the opening of the bladder, making it easier for men to urinate. It works by blocking certain receptors (called alpha-1 receptors) in the prostate, which helps urine flow more freely.

How it works

Selectively blocks alpha-1A adrenergic receptors in the prostate and bladder neck, reducing smooth muscle contraction and improving urinary flow in benign prostatic hyperplasia. This receptor selectivity minimizes effects on vascular alpha-1B receptors, resulting in minimal blood pressure reduction compared to non-selective alpha-blockers.

How to take this drug

Take one 8 mg capsule once daily with food — preferably with the same meal each day. Swallow the capsule whole with water; do not crush, chew, or open it. Taking it with food helps your body absorb it properly. If your doctor finds you have kidney problems, the dose may be reduced to 4 mg once daily.

What if I Miss a Dose?

If you miss a dose, skip it and take your next dose at the usual time with your meal. Do not take two capsules at once to make up for the missed one.

What to watch out for

Always buy from a reputable pharmacy — avoid roadside sellers or unregistered shops, as fake medicines are common. Stand up slowly from sitting or lying down to avoid dizziness and falls, especially in the first few days. If you are scheduled for cataract or eye surgery, inform your eye doctor that you are taking silodosin, as it can affect the procedure.

Common Side Effects

Reduced or absent release of semen during sex (this is the most common and is not harmful)
dizziness or lightheadedness especially when standing up quickly
runny or stuffy nose
headache
mild diarrhoea

Serious Side Effects

Severe dizziness or fainting — especially when you stand up suddenly
which could cause you to fall and injure yourself. Allergic reactions such as swelling of the face
lips
or throat and difficulty breathing — go to the hospital immediately. A painful erection that lasts more than 4 hours (priapism) — seek emergency care right away.

Drug Interactions

Do not take silodosin with other prostate or blood pressure medicines like tamsulosin, prazosin, or doxazosin — combining them can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure. Avoid taking it with strong antifungal medicines like ketoconazole or itraconazole, as they increase silodosin levels in your blood. Alcohol can worsen dizziness and lightheadedness, so limit or avoid alcohol while on this medicine.

Silodosin is only for men and should never be taken by women, whether pregnant, breastfeeding, or otherwise.

Who Should NOT Take This

People allergic to silodosin or any ingredient in the capsule
men with severe liver problems
men with severe kidney problems
people already taking other alpha-blocker medicines for prostate or blood pressure
and women or children should not take this drug.

How to Store

Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C — away from direct sunlight and humidity, which can be a problem in Nigerian weather. Keep the capsules in their original packaging and always store out of reach of children.
