For adults treating malaria, the usual dose is 600 mg (two 300 mg tablets) taken every 8 hours — that means 3 times a day — for 7 days. Take the tablets with food or a glass of water to reduce stomach upset. The tablets can taste very bitter, so swallow them whole without chewing. You may be told to combine quinine with another antimalarial like doxycycline or clindamycin to make sure the malaria is fully cleared.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Do not take two doses at once to make up for it.
Always buy your quinine from a licensed pharmacy — brands like Alpaquine, Malacide, or Osyquine-300 are available in Nigeria, so avoid unbranded or roadside versions that may be fake or expired. Complete the full 7-day course even if you feel better after a few days, otherwise the malaria can come back stronger. If you notice ringing in your ears, blurred vision, or feel your heart racing, stop and see a doctor immediately.
Do not take quinine with mefloquine (another antimalarial) as it increases the risk of seizures and heart problems. Quinine can increase the effect of blood-thinning drugs like warfarin, causing dangerous bleeding. Avoid alcohol while taking quinine as it can worsen dizziness and stomach upset.

Quinine can be used during pregnancy for severe malaria when the benefit outweighs the risk, but only under a doctor's strict supervision — it can cause low blood sugar in pregnant women and may affect the baby, so never self-medicate.
