This is not a drug you swallow — it is applied on the body. For wounds, apply the solution (like Wosan Solution or Betadine Solution) directly to the affected area 1-3 times daily. For sore throat or mouth infections, use the gargle (like Betadine Gargle or Wosan Mouth Wash) — dilute as directed on the pack, gargle for 30 seconds, then spit it out. Do not swallow. For skin infections, apply the ointment (like Wosan Ointment or Aritadine Ointment) thinly to the area 1-2 times daily.
If you forget to apply it at the usual time, just apply it as soon as you remember. Since it is used on the skin or for gargling, there is no serious risk from a missed application — simply continue your normal routine.
Buy only from reputable pharmacies — brands like Wosan, Betadine, and Aritadine are well known in Nigeria. Do not swallow povidone-iodine solutions; they are strictly for external use or gargling. The brown stain on skin or fabric is normal and will wash off, but be careful with your clothes.
Do not use povidone-iodine together with hydrogen peroxide or other antiseptics on the same wound, as they can cancel each other out. Avoid using it alongside mercury-based products (like some traditional skin treatments). If you are taking thyroid medication, prolonged use of povidone-iodine on large areas can affect your thyroid levels — inform your doctor.

Is it safe to take Povidone-iodine with your other drugs?
Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid prolonged or large-area use of povidone-iodine, as excess iodine can affect the baby's thyroid — consult your doctor before using it.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Keep the bottle or tube tightly closed after use. Do not store in the bathroom where humidity is high. Keep out of the reach of children — the iodine solution can stain and is harmful if swallowed.
