Antiviral/Cytotoxic (wart remover)
Brand of Podophyllotoxin
Last reviewed June 2026
Who is this for?
Podophyllotoxin is a plant-based medicine that works by stopping the growth of abnormal skin cells, specifically wart cells, causing them to die and fall off over time.
Binds to tubulin and inhibits microtubule assembly in the metaphase of cell division, causing arrest of mitosis and leading to necrosis of wart tissue infected with human papillomavirus (HPV).

Apply a thin layer of the cream directly onto the wart twice a day (morning and night) for 3 days, then stop for 4 days. This makes one treatment cycle. You can repeat for up to 4 cycles if the wart is still there. Use your finger or a small applicator to dab it only on the wart — avoid the healthy skin around it. Wash your hands well after applying.
If you forget to apply it, just apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not apply extra to make up for it.
Only buy Podophyllin Cream from registered pharmacies — do not buy from roadside vendors or open markets as fake products can burn or damage your skin badly. Apply it only on the wart itself and not on surrounding healthy skin — you can apply petroleum jelly (Vaseline) around the wart to protect normal skin. Genital warts are caused by a virus (HPV), so even after the warts clear, see a doctor about preventing spread to your partner.
Do not use other wart removal products (like salicylic acid-based removers) on the same area at the same time as it can cause severe skin damage. Avoid using harsh soaps, perfumes, or body sprays directly on the treated area. There are no known major food or alcohol interactions, but alcohol may slow healing in general.
