ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) is a mixture of salts and sugar dissolved in water that replaces fluids and minerals your body loses during diarrhea or vomiting, while Zinc helps your body fight the infection faster, reduces how long the diarrhea lasts, and strengthens your gut.

For ORS: dissolve the full sachet in the exact amount of clean water stated on the pack — do not add less or more water. Sip the solution throughout the day, especially after each episode of stooling or vomiting. For Zinc: adults take one 20mg tablet daily for 10 to 14 days. You can take Zinc with or without food, but it works better on a slightly empty stomach. Continue the full Zinc course even after the diarrhea stops.
If you miss a dose of Zinc, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue normally — do not double up. For ORS, there is no fixed dose to miss — just keep drinking it regularly throughout the day.
Always buy ORS and Zinc from a registered pharmacy — avoid roadside sellers or open market products as they may be fake or expired. Make sure to use clean, safe drinking water when preparing ORS solution — if you are not sure, boil and cool the water first. Complete the full 10-14 day Zinc course even if the diarrhea stops early, as it helps prevent future episodes.
Zinc can reduce how well antibiotics like ciprofloxacin and tetracycline work, so take them at least 2 hours apart. Iron supplements and Zinc should also be taken at different times as they compete for absorption. ORS does not have major drug interactions but always inform your pharmacist about other medications you are taking.

ORS is safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding; Zinc at the recommended dose is generally considered safe, but pregnant women should consult their doctor before starting it.
Store both ORS sachets and Zinc tablets in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid storing near windows or in cars. Once ORS solution is prepared, use it within 24 hours and throw away any leftover. Keep all medicines out of reach of children.
