Who is this for?

Mannitol is a type of sugar solution given through a drip (IV) that works by pulling excess water out of swollen tissues, especially the brain and eyes, and flushing it out through your kidneys as urine.

Creates an osmotic gradient in the glomerular filtrate and extracellular fluid by remaining non-reabsorbable in the renal tubules, drawing water from tissues (including brain and eye) into the intravascular space for excretion as urine, thereby reducing intracranial and intraocular pressure.

Is Mannitol safe to take with another drug?

Mannitol is not something you take at home by yourself. It is given in a hospital through a drip (IV line) by a doctor or nurse. The dose depends on your condition and body weight, typically 0.25g to 2g per kilogram of body weight, infused slowly over 30 to 60 minutes. Only a healthcare professional should administer this drug.

Since mannitol is given in a hospital by medical professionals, missed doses are unlikely. If an infusion schedule is delayed, your doctor or nurse will adjust the timing. Do not try to administer this drug yourself.

Using mannitol with blood pressure-lowering drugs can cause your blood pressure to drop too low. Combining it with lithium (used for mental health conditions) can reduce lithium's effectiveness. Taking it alongside other drugs that are harsh on the kidneys (like some strong antibiotics) can increase the risk of kidney damage.

Store at room temperature, away from extreme heat and direct sunlight. Do not freeze — freezing can cause crystals to form in the solution. If you see crystals or particles floating in the solution, do not use it. Keep out of reach of children. In Nigerian weather, store in a cool, dry area of the hospital or pharmacy.
