Antibiotic (Penicillinase-resistant Penicillin)
Brand of Flucloxacillin
Last reviewed June 2026
Who is this for?
Flucloxacillin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria by breaking down their protective cell walls, making it especially effective against staph infections that resist ordinary penicillin.
Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins and preventing peptidoglycan cross-linking; resistant to β-lactamase inactivation, making it effective against penicillinase-producing Staphylococcus aureus.

Adults usually take 250 mg to 500 mg (one capsule) four times a day, every 6 hours. Take it on an empty stomach — at least 30 minutes before food or 2 hours after eating, as food reduces how well it works. Swallow with a full glass of water and complete the entire course your doctor prescribed, even if you feel better.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for it.
Important for antibiotics
Always complete the full course even if you feel better. Stopping early can cause the infection to return and become drug-resistant.
Always complete the full course of flucloxacillin even if your boil or infection looks healed — stopping early helps bacteria become resistant, which is a growing problem in Nigeria. Buy only from licensed pharmacies, not roadside vendors or open markets, as fake antibiotics are common. Do not share your flucloxacillin with anyone else, even if they have a similar infection — let them see a doctor.
Flucloxacillin may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives (birth control pills) — use additional protection during your course. Warfarin (blood thinner) effects may change when taken with flucloxacillin, so inform your doctor. Methotrexate levels can increase dangerously if taken together — always tell your doctor all the medicines you are using.

Is it safe to take Flucloxacillin with your other drugs?
Flucloxacillin should only be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding if your doctor says it is necessary — consult your doctor before taking it.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigeria's hot weather can spoil medicines fast. Keep the suspension in a refrigerator after mixing and use within 7–14 days as directed on the label. Always keep out of reach of children.
