Haematinic (Blood-building supplement)
Brand of Ferrous sulfate; Folic acid; Zinc
Last reviewed June 2026
Who is this for?
This is a combination supplement containing iron (ferrous sulfate), folic acid (a B vitamin), and zinc — three nutrients your body needs to build healthy blood cells, support your immune system, and keep your body working well.
Replenishes iron stores by providing ferrous iron for haemoglobin synthesis; supplies folic acid as a cofactor for DNA synthesis and erythrocyte maturation; provides zinc as a cofactor for protein synthesis and immune function, collectively restoring oxygen-carrying capacity and correcting nutritional anaemias.

Adults usually take 1 capsule once or twice daily, preferably on an empty stomach or 1 hour before meals for best absorption. If it upsets your stomach, you can take it with a small amount of food. Swallow the capsule whole with a full glass of water. Known in Nigeria as Fefodan-Z Capsule.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take two capsules at once to make up for a missed dose.
Buy only from reputable pharmacies — avoid roadside sellers or open market drugs, as fake supplements are common in Nigeria. Do not take more than the recommended dose thinking it will work faster — too much iron can be poisonous, especially for children. If your symptoms of tiredness and weakness do not improve after a few weeks, see your doctor for a proper blood test.
Do not take this supplement with tea, coffee, or milk around the same time, as they reduce iron absorption — wait at least 2 hours. Antacids (drugs for ulcer like aluminium hydroxide) also reduce absorption, so space them apart. If you are taking antibiotics like tetracycline or ciprofloxacin, take them at least 2 hours before or after this supplement.

Is it safe to take Ferrous with your other drugs?
This supplement is commonly recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding to prevent anaemia and support the baby's development, but always take it under your doctor's or midwife's supervision.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it in your car or near windows. Keep the container tightly closed to protect from humidity, and always keep it out of the reach of children, as iron overdose in children can be very dangerous.
