How it works

Inhibits sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) in the proximal renal tubule, reducing glucose reabsorption and increasing urinary glucose excretion. This lowers blood glucose levels while promoting natriuresis and reducing cardiac preload and intraglomerular pressure, conferring cardiovascular and renal protective effects.

How to take this drug

Take one tablet (usually 10 mg) once daily in the morning, with or without food. Your doctor may increase it to 25 mg if your blood sugar is still not well controlled. Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water. Drink plenty of water throughout the day while taking this medicine.

What if I Miss a Dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember that same day. If it is already close to the time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take two tablets to make up for the one you missed.

Drug Interactions

Using empagliflozin with insulin or glimepiride (another sugar drug) can cause your blood sugar to drop too low — your doctor may need to adjust your doses. Diuretics (water tablets like furosemide/Lasix) taken together can cause excessive loss of body water and make you feel dizzy or faint. Avoid drinking too much alcohol as it can increase the risk of low blood sugar and dehydration.
