Who is this for?

Docetaxel is a powerful cancer-fighting drug (chemotherapy) that works by stopping cancer cells from growing and dividing, eventually killing them. It belongs to a group of medicines called taxanes, which are made from compounds originally found in yew trees.

Binds to and stabilizes microtubules by promoting tubulin polymerization and inhibiting depolymerization, thereby disrupting mitotic spindle formation and arresting cancer cells in the G2/M phase of the cell cycle, leading to apoptosis.

Is Docetaxel safe to take with another drug?

This is NOT a drug you take at home. It is given by a trained doctor or nurse as a drip (infusion) into your vein, usually over about one hour, once every three weeks. Your doctor will calculate your exact dose based on your body size. You will usually be given steroid tablets (like dexamethasone) for a few days before and after each session to reduce side effects.

Since this drug is given by a doctor or nurse at a hospital on a set schedule, you are unlikely to miss a dose on your own. If you miss a scheduled appointment, contact your cancer treatment centre immediately to reschedule. Do not try to double up.

• Low blood cell counts (which makes you more likely to catch infections or feel very tired)
• hair loss
• nausea and vomiting
• mouth sores
• and swelling of hands and feet due to fluid retention

Ketoconazole and other strong antifungal drugs can increase docetaxel levels in your blood and worsen side effects — tell your doctor about any antifungals you are using. Avoid alcohol as it can worsen liver stress caused by this drug. Also inform your doctor if you are taking erythromycin or any herbal supplements, as they may interfere with how docetaxel works.

Store unopened vials below 25°C — in Nigeria's heat, keep it in a refrigerator or a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. This drug is typically stored and handled by pharmacists and hospitals. Keep far away from children. Do not use it after the expiry date.
