Clotrimazole is an antifungal medicine that works by killing fungi and yeast that cause infections on the skin and in the vagina. It damages the protective covering of the fungus, causing it to die off.

For skin cream or powder: Apply a thin layer to the affected area 2-3 times daily for 2-4 weeks. Wash and dry the area before applying. For vaginal tablet (like Canesten Gyn or Clovigal): Insert one 500mg tablet deep into the vagina once, or one 100mg tablet every night for 6-7 nights, preferably at bedtime. For vaginal cream: Insert using the applicator once daily at bedtime for 3-7 days.
If you forget to apply or insert it, do so as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Don't double up to make up for a missed dose.
Complete the full course of treatment even if the itching or discharge stops early — stopping too soon can cause the infection to come back. Buy only from reputable pharmacies and not roadside sellers, as improperly stored antifungal products may not work. If your symptoms don't improve after 7 days of treatment, see a doctor — it may not be a simple fungal infection.
Clotrimazole vaginal tablets can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms, so they may tear during sex — use alternative protection or avoid sex during treatment. If you are taking tacrolimus or sirolimus (drugs used after organ transplant), clotrimazole may increase their levels in the body. There are no major food or alcohol interactions.

Consult your doctor before using clotrimazole during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester — it may be used in later pregnancy only under medical guidance; it is generally considered safe during breastfeeding when used on the skin.
Store in a cool, dry place below 30°C — avoid keeping it in direct sunlight or hot areas like near a window or inside a car. Keep the cream tube properly closed after use. Vaginal tablets should stay in their foil pack until ready to use. Keep all forms away from children.
