Betamethasone is a strong steroid (corticosteroid) medicine that works by reducing swelling, redness, itching, and allergic reactions in the body. It calms down your immune system when it is overreacting.
Binds to glucocorticoid receptors in the cytoplasm, translocating to the nucleus to suppress pro-inflammatory gene expression and inhibit the synthesis of cytokines, chemokines, and adhesion molecules. This reduces immune cell infiltration, decreases vascular permeability, and suppresses both local and systemic inflammatory responses.

For tablets: Usually 0.5mg to 5mg daily depending on your condition, taken with food to avoid stomach upset. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose. For cream: Apply a thin layer to the affected skin area once or twice daily. Do not use more than your doctor prescribes and do not cover the area with a bandage unless told to.
If you miss a dose of the tablet, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue normally. For the cream, just apply it when you remember and continue your routine. Never double up to make up for a missed dose.
Do not use steroid creams for longer than your doctor prescribes — using them too long can permanently damage your skin, especially on the face. Do not buy betamethasone cream from roadside sellers or apply it as a skin lightening cream, as this is very dangerous and can cause serious skin damage. Never stop taking betamethasone tablets suddenly if you have been on them for a while — your doctor needs to reduce the dose gradually.
Avoid taking with NSAIDs like ibuprofen or diclofenac as this increases the risk of stomach ulcers. Be careful if you are on diabetes medicines — betamethasone can raise your blood sugar and your diabetes drugs may need adjusting. Alcohol should be avoided as it increases the chance of stomach problems.
