When to see a doctor

Seek care if you notice any of the following

  • You have severe abdominal pain that does not go away with laxatives or stool softeners.
  • You have blood in your stool or black, tarry stools.
  • You have difficulty passing urine or cannot urinate at all.
  • You have a fever over 38°C (100.4°F) that lasts for more than 2 days.
  • You have not had a bowel movement for more than 7 days despite using laxatives or stool softeners.
