Methoxy polyethylene glycol-epoetin beta (sold as Mircera) is an injection that helps your body make more red blood cells. It works by mimicking a natural hormone called erythropoietin that your kidneys produce to signal your bone marrow to produce red blood cells.
Binds to and activates erythropoietin receptors on bone marrow progenitor cells, stimulating red blood cell production and differentiation to correct anaemia in chronic kidney disease. The polyethylene glycol conjugation extends the drug's half-life, allowing less frequent dosing while maintaining sustained erythropoietic activity.
