Targeted cancer therapy (antibody-drug conjugate)
Last reviewed July 2026
Who is this for?
Trastuzumab emtansine (sold as Kadcyla in Nigeria) is a targeted cancer medicine that combines an antibody with a powerful chemotherapy drug. It attaches specifically to HER2 protein on certain breast cancer cells and delivers the chemotherapy directly into those cells, killing them while sparing most healthy cells.
Binds to HER2 receptors on cancer cells and delivers a cytotoxic payload (emtansine) that inhibits microtubule assembly, causing cell cycle arrest and apoptosis. This dual mechanism of targeted delivery and microtubule disruption enhances selective destruction of HER2-positive breast cancer cells.
HER2-positive breast cancer that has spread to other parts of the body (metastatic breast cancer), early-stage HER2-positive breast cancer after surgery when there is still some cancer remaining

Since this medicine is given at a hospital on a scheduled basis, if you miss an appointment, contact your oncologist (cancer doctor) immediately to reschedule. Do not wait until the next cycle; get your next dose as soon as possible and your doctor will adjust your schedule.
Only receive this drug at a recognised cancer treatment centre, never buy or attempt to use it outside a hospital setting. Do not confuse Kadcyla (trastuzumab emtansine) with regular trastuzumab (Herceptin), as they are different medicines and cannot be swapped. Attend all your scheduled blood tests and heart check-ups, as your doctor needs to monitor your liver, blood counts, and heart function throughout treatment.
Avoid taking strong CYP3A4 inhibitors like ketoconazole (a common antifungal in Nigeria) as they can increase the toxic effects of this drug, so inform your doctor about any antifungal or antibiotic you are using. Blood thinners like warfarin may increase your risk of bleeding since this drug already lowers your platelet count. Always tell your cancer doctor about every medicine, herbal remedy, or supplement you are taking.
Check your specific combination
Is it safe to take Trastuzumab with your other drugs?
Trastuzumab emtansine is NOT safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding, as it can cause serious harm or death to an unborn baby, so women of childbearing age must use effective contraception during treatment and for at least 7 months after the last dose.
Kadcyla vials should be stored in a refrigerator (2–8°C). Do not freeze. Keep it away from direct sunlight and heat, which is especially important in Nigeria's hot climate. Once mixed by the pharmacist, it should be used within 24 hours if refrigerated. Always keep out of reach of children.
For information only: not medical advice. Always talk to a doctor or pharmacist before changing your medication.
