Secnidazole is an antibiotic that kills certain bacteria and parasites in your body by damaging their DNA so they cannot survive or multiply. It is similar to metronidazole (Flagyl) but works longer, so you usually only need a single dose.

For most infections, the adult dose is 2 grams (four 500 mg tablets) taken as a single dose — all at once. Take it with food to reduce stomach upset. In some cases like bacterial vaginosis, your doctor may prescribe 2 grams as a one-time dose. For amoeba infections, your doctor may recommend 2 grams once daily for 3 days. Always follow your doctor's specific instruction. Common Nigerian brands include Bactrosec, Gresec, Secwid, Swisec-500, and Tagera Forte.
Since secnidazole is usually taken as a single dose, missing it is unlikely. If your doctor prescribed it for multiple days and you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one — do not double up.
Important for antibiotics
Always complete the full course even if you feel better. Stopping early can cause the infection to return and become drug-resistant.
Do not buy secnidazole from roadside sellers or unregistered vendors — purchase only from licensed pharmacies to be sure you are getting genuine medication. Do not drink any form of alcohol including palm wine, ogogoro, or beer for at least 72 hours (3 days) after taking this drug. If your doctor prescribes a multi-day course, complete the full course even if you feel better — stopping early can make the infection come back stronger.
Do NOT drink alcohol while taking secnidazole and for at least 3 days after — it can cause severe nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and headache. Avoid taking it with blood thinners like warfarin as it can increase the risk of bleeding. Let your doctor know if you are taking lithium or any seizure medication.

Secnidazole is not recommended during the first three months of pregnancy and should be used during breastfeeding only if your doctor says it is absolutely necessary — always consult your doctor before taking it if you are pregnant or nursing.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid keeping it in your car or near windows. Keep it in its original pack and far away from children.
