Rivaroxaban is a blood thinner that works by blocking a specific clotting factor in your blood (called Factor Xa), which helps prevent dangerous blood clots from forming in your veins and arteries.

The dose depends on your condition. For blood clot treatment, the usual dose is 15 mg twice daily with food for the first 3 weeks, then 20 mg once daily with food. For stroke prevention with irregular heartbeat, it is usually 20 mg once daily with your evening meal. For clot prevention after surgery, it is usually 10 mg once daily with or without food. Always follow your doctor's specific instructions — do not adjust the dose on your own.
If you are on the 15 mg twice daily dose and you miss one, take it as soon as you remember — you can take both 15 mg doses together to make up for it. If you are on a once daily dose, take it as soon as you remember on the same day, but do not take two doses the next day to catch up.
This is a strictly prescription drug — do not buy it from roadside sellers or use someone else's prescription, as wrong dosing can cause life-threatening bleeding. Do not stop taking rivaroxaban suddenly without your doctor's permission, as this can increase your risk of a blood clot or stroke. If you need surgery, dental work, or any procedure, always tell the doctor or dentist that you are on a blood thinner.
Avoid taking with other blood thinners like warfarin or aspirin unless your doctor says so, as this greatly increases bleeding risk. Some antifungal drugs like ketoconazole and some antibiotics like erythromycin or rifampicin can dangerously increase or decrease rivaroxaban's effect. Alcohol should be limited as it increases the risk of stomach bleeding.

Rivaroxaban is not safe during pregnancy as it can cause serious bleeding and harm the unborn baby; it should also be avoided while breastfeeding — talk to your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or nursing.
Store at room temperature below 30°C, away from direct sunlight and moisture. Keep in the original pack and away from children. Nigerian heat and humidity can affect the drug, so avoid storing it in the bathroom or near a window.
