How it works

Inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes reducing prostaglandin synthesis to decrease fever and pain; blocks H1 histamine receptors to suppress allergic responses and cough; and increases respiratory tract fluid secretion to facilitate mucus expectoration while sodium benzoate acts as a mild antimicrobial preservative.

How to take this drug

For adults, take 1-2 tablespoons (15-30ml) of the syrup 2-3 times a day. You can take it with or without food. Shake the bottle well before each use. Do not exceed the recommended dose because of the paracetamol content. Known in Nigeria as Oplex Syrup.

What if I Miss a Dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, just skip the missed one and continue as normal. Do not double up to make up for the missed dose.

What to watch out for

This medicine makes you very drowsy — do not drive, ride okada, or operate heavy machines after taking it. Buy only from reputable pharmacies and check the NAFDAC number on the Oplex Syrup bottle to avoid fake products. Do not use this syrup for more than 5-7 days without seeing a doctor — if your cough persists, it could be something more serious.

Serious Side Effects

Severe allergic reaction such as swelling of the face
tongue or throat and difficulty breathing — go to the hospital immediately. Yellowing of the skin or eyes (sign of liver damage from too much paracetamol) — stop taking the drug and see a doctor at once.

Drug Interactions

Do not drink alcohol while taking this syrup — both the oxomemazine and paracetamol can cause serious problems with alcohol, including liver damage and extreme drowsiness. Avoid taking extra paracetamol tablets (like Panadol or Emzor Paracetamol) alongside this syrup since it already contains paracetamol and you may overdose. Be careful with sleeping pills or antihistamines like Piriton as the drowsiness can become dangerously strong.

Do not use this medicine during pregnancy or while breastfeeding unless your doctor specifically says it is okay, as some of the ingredients can affect the baby.

children under 2 years old
people currently taking other medicines that cause drowsiness such as strong sleeping pills
and people who drink alcohol heavily.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid storing near windows or in your car. Keep the bottle tightly closed after use and keep it far away from children's reach.
