Who is this for?

Palbociclib (sold as Ibrance in Nigeria) is a cancer medicine that works by blocking certain proteins called CDK4 and CDK6 that help cancer cells grow and multiply, essentially slowing down or stopping breast cancer growth.

Inhibits cyclin-dependent kinases 4 and 6 (CDK4/6), preventing phosphorylation of the retinoblastoma protein and arresting the cell cycle in G1 phase, thereby suppressing proliferation of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer cells.

Is Palbociclib safe to take with another drug?

The usual dose is one 125 mg capsule taken once daily with food for 21 days in a row, followed by 7 days off (no drug). This makes one complete 28-day cycle. Always take it with food as it helps your body absorb the medicine properly. Swallow the capsule whole — do not crush, chew, or open it. Your oncologist (cancer doctor) will tell you how many cycles you need.

If you miss a dose or vomit after taking it, do not take an extra dose that day. Just take your next dose at the normal scheduled time the following day. Let your doctor know if you frequently miss doses.

• Low blood cell counts (which can make you feel very tired or catch infections easily)

• nausea or loss of appetite
• mouth sores
• and hair thinning or hair loss

Avoid grapefruit and grapefruit juice as they can increase the drug level in your blood and worsen side effects. Strong herbal remedies and supplements, especially St. John's wort, can reduce how well the drug works. Some antibiotics and antifungal medicines (like ketoconazole or clarithromycin) can dangerously increase palbociclib levels — always tell your cancer doctor about every medicine you are taking.

Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and excessive heat. Keep in a cool, dry place since Nigerian humidity can damage capsules. Always keep it far out of reach of children and never share it with anyone.
