Acupan Injection

Who is this for?

Nefopam (sold as Acupan in Nigeria) is a painkiller that works by acting on your brain and spinal cord to reduce how your body feels pain, without being an opioid or a steroid.

Inhibits reuptake of monoamine neurotransmitters (noradrenaline, serotonin, and dopamine) in the central nervous system, enhancing pain modulation through descending inhibitory pathways. Additionally blocks sodium and calcium channels, reducing neuronal excitability and pain signal transmission.

Is Nefopam safe to take with another drug?

For adults, the usual dose is 30mg to 60mg by mouth three times a day, or it can be given as an injection by a healthcare worker (20mg by injection into the muscle every 6 hours). Tablets should be swallowed with water and can be taken with food to reduce stomach upset. Do not exceed 180mg per day by mouth.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for it.

• nausea or wanting to vomit
• dry mouth
• feeling sweaty
• difficulty sleeping

Avoid drinking alcohol while taking nefopam as it can make dizziness and drowsiness much worse. Be careful if you are taking other medicines that affect the brain such as tramadol or antidepressants, as they can increase the risk of seizures. Tell your doctor if you are using any antimalarial or antihistamine medicines.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it in your car or near a window. Keep it in its original packaging and far away from children.
