How to take this drug

Adults take one 10mg tablet once daily, usually in the evening. You can take it with or without food. For asthma, take it every day even when you are not having symptoms. In Nigeria, common brands include Asthator 10, Montiget 10mg, and Precom Tablet.

What if I Miss a Dose?

If you forget to take your dose, just skip it and take the next one at your usual time. Do not take two tablets at once to make up for the missed dose.

What to watch out for

Buy only from licensed pharmacies — avoid roadside sellers or open market drugs, as fake medicines are common in Nigeria. Montelukast is for prevention, not for stopping an asthma attack that has already started — always have your reliever inhaler with you. Watch for any mood changes especially in children and teenagers, and report them to your doctor immediately.

Drug Interactions

Phenobarbital and rifampicin (commonly used for epilepsy and tuberculosis in Nigeria) can reduce how well montelukast works. Inform your doctor if you are taking any other asthma medicines so the doses can be properly adjusted. Alcohol does not have a major interaction, but it is best to limit it as it can worsen side effects like drowsiness.

Who Should NOT Take This

People who are allergic to montelukast or any ingredient in the tablet should not take it. It should not be used to treat a sudden asthma attack — always keep your rescue inhaler handy. People with phenylketonuria (PKU) should avoid the chewable tablets as they may contain phenylalanine.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it in your car or near windows. Keep the medicine in its original pack and far from children's reach.
