Rebif 44 Micrograms Solution for Injection

Who is this for?

Interferon beta-1a is an injectable medicine made from a protein that your body naturally produces to regulate your immune system. It works by calming down the overactive immune system that mistakenly attacks the protective covering of your nerves.

Binds to interferon-beta receptors on immune cells, activating JAK-STAT signaling pathways that increase anti-inflammatory cytokine production and suppress pro-inflammatory T-cell responses. This reduces demyelinating inflammation in the central nervous system and decreases the frequency of disease relapses in multiple sclerosis.

Is Interferon safe to take with another drug?

This is not a tablet — it is given as an injection under the skin (subcutaneous). The usual dose is 44 micrograms (one prefilled syringe of Rebif 44) injected three times a week, with at least 48 hours between each injection. Your doctor will start you on a lower dose and gradually increase it over the first few weeks. A nurse or doctor will teach you or a caregiver how to give the injection properly.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, then continue your regular schedule. Do not take two doses within 48 hours of each other. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose — just skip it and carry on as normal.

• Flu-like symptoms such as fever

• body aches
• and headache (especially when you first start)
• redness or swelling at the injection site
• tiredness
• and muscle pain. These symptoms often improve after a few months of treatment.

Be careful if you are taking medicines that affect your liver, as interferon beta-1a can also stress the liver. Avoid excessive alcohol as it increases the risk of liver damage. If you are on epilepsy medicines or other drugs that lower your blood cell counts, inform your doctor before starting this injection.

Store Rebif 44 in a refrigerator (2°C to 8°C). In Nigeria's hot climate, never leave it outside the fridge or in direct sunlight — the heat will damage it. If you don't have a fridge, you can keep it at room temperature below 25°C for up to 28 days only, then throw it away. Keep it far away from children.
