Inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to UDP-N-acetylglucosamine enolpyruvyl transferase (MurA), preventing peptidoglycan precursor formation and causing bacterial cell lysis. Exhibits bactericidal activity against gram-positive and gram-negative uropathogens with rapid urinary penetration.

How to take this drug

For adults, dissolve one sachet (3g) of the granules in half a glass of water and drink it on an empty stomach — ideally 2 to 3 hours before or after eating. You only need to take it once. It is best to take it at bedtime after you have emptied your bladder. One single dose is the full treatment for most UTIs. Sold in Nigeria as Monuril Granules.

What if I Miss a Dose?

Since fosfomycin is a single-dose treatment, there is usually no missed dose to worry about. If you forgot to take it or are unsure whether you took it properly, simply take your one dose as soon as you remember, preferably on an empty stomach.

Important for antibiotics

Always complete the full course even if you feel better. Stopping early can cause the infection to return and become drug-resistant.

What to watch out for

Buy only from licensed pharmacies — avoid buying antibiotics from roadside sellers or open markets, as fake or expired drugs are common. Even though fosfomycin is a single-dose antibiotic, do not share it with someone else who has similar symptoms — they need to see a doctor for proper diagnosis.
