How it works

Inhibits bacterial protein synthesis via 30S ribosomal subunit binding (neomycin and polymyxin B), disrupts bacterial cell membrane integrity (polymyxin B), activates glucocorticoid receptors to suppress inflammatory cytokines and reduce edema (fludrocortisone), and blocks sodium channel influx to provide local anesthesia (lidocaine).

How to take this drug

For adults, put 2 to 5 drops into the affected ear 2 to 4 times daily as directed by your doctor. Tilt your head to the side and keep it tilted for about 5 minutes after putting in the drops so the medicine stays in. Do not use for more than 10 days unless your doctor says so.

What if I Miss a Dose?

If you miss a dose, put the drops in as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not double the drops to make up for a missed dose.

Important for antibiotics

Always complete the full course even if you feel better. Stopping early can cause the infection to return and become drug-resistant.

What to watch out for

Buy only from a licensed pharmacy — Otomed Ear Drops sold by roadside vendors may be fake or expired. Complete the full course of treatment even if your ear feels better after a few days, otherwise the infection can come back. Do not share your ear drops with another person, as this can spread infection.

If you are taking any aminoglycoside antibiotics (like gentamicin injections), tell your doctor as combining them with neomycin can increase the risk of hearing damage. There are no major food or alcohol interactions since this is applied in the ear.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it on a window sill or in a hot car. Keep the bottle tightly closed and out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiry date on the pack.
