Esomeprazole is a drug that reduces the amount of acid your stomach produces by blocking the tiny pumps in your stomach wall that release acid. It belongs to a group called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and helps your stomach and food pipe heal from acid damage.

For most stomach acid problems, take one 20 mg or 40 mg capsule/tablet once a day, usually in the morning before eating — at least 30 minutes to 1 hour before your first meal. Swallow it whole with water; do not crush or chew. Your doctor will tell you whether to use 20 mg or 40 mg and for how long, usually 4 to 8 weeks depending on the condition.
If you forget to take your dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, just skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take two doses at once to make up for it.
Buy only from reputable pharmacies — brands like Nexium, Esop-40, Esorest, Esoz-20, or Stulcer are available in Nigeria; avoid buying loose or unbranded capsules from roadside sellers. Do not use esomeprazole for long periods (more than 8 weeks) without a doctor's guidance, as prolonged use can weaken your bones and lower important minerals like magnesium in your body. If your stomach symptoms do not improve after 2 weeks of use, see a doctor — it could be something more serious that needs proper investigation.
Esomeprazole can reduce the effectiveness of clopidogrel (a blood thinner used after heart problems) — avoid using them together. It can increase the levels of diazepam (Valium) and methotrexate in your body, which may cause more side effects. If you take antifungal medicines like ketoconazole or itraconazole, esomeprazole may reduce how well they work because these drugs need stomach acid to be absorbed.
