Calcium Polystyrene Sulphonate is a powder medicine that works in your gut like a sponge: it absorbs excess potassium from your body and replaces it with calcium, then carries the potassium out when you pass stool.
Binds to potassium ions in the gastrointestinal tract through ion-exchange mechanisms, allowing sodium ions to be released in exchange; the bound potassium is then eliminated in faeces, thereby reducing serum potassium levels.
High potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalaemia), which can happen with kidney problems or kidney failure
