How do you take Brolucizumab?

This is not a drug you take at home. It is an injection (6 mg dose) given into your eye by a trained eye doctor (ophthalmologist) in a clinic or hospital. You will typically get one injection every month for the first 3 months, then your doctor will decide how often you need it, usually every 2 to 3 months. In Nigeria, it may be available as Pagenax 120 mg/mL Solution for Injection.

Who should not take Brolucizumab?

People who are allergic to brolucizumab or any of its ingredients, people with an active eye infection or severe inflammation in or around the eye, and pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this drug.

What is this drug?

Brolucizumab is an injection given directly into the eye that works by blocking a protein called VEGF, which causes abnormal blood vessel growth and leakage in the back of the eye, helping to protect your vision.

How it works

Binds to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), preventing its interaction with VEGF receptors on endothelial cells and thereby inhibiting abnormal neovascularization and vascular permeability in retinal tissues. This suppresses pathological angiogenesis and reduces exudation in wet age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy.

What is it used for?

Wet age-related macular degeneration (a condition where the central part of your vision gets blurry or lost, usually in older people), diabetic eye disease (swelling at the back of the eye caused by diabetes)

What to watch out for

This injection must only be given by a qualified eye specialist in a proper hospital or clinic, never from unverified sources or roadside sellers. Serious Side Effects

Sudden loss of vision or worsening vision: go to the hospital immediately. Severe eye pain
swelling
or redness that gets worse (this could be an eye infection or inflammation inside the eye). Signs of a blood clot such as sudden weakness on one side of the body
trouble speaking
or chest pain: seek emergency help.

Drug Interactions

There are no major known food or common drug interactions since this is injected into the eye by a doctor. However, always tell your eye doctor about all other medications you are taking, including herbal remedies and supplements. If you are receiving other eye injections or treatments, your doctor needs to know to space them properly.

Pregnancy & Breastfeeding Warning

Brolucizumab is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding as it may harm the baby. Women of childbearing age should use effective contraception and consult their doctor before treatment.

How to Store
