Whitfield's Ointment

Who is this for?

This is a topical ointment (commonly known as Whitfield's Ointment) that combines benzoic acid and salicylic acid to fight fungal infections on the skin — benzoic acid kills the fungus while salicylic acid helps peel away the infected skin so the medicine can work better.

Is Benzoic safe to take with another drug?

Apply a thin layer of the ointment to the affected area of skin two times a day — morning and night. Wash and dry the area well before applying. Continue using it for at least 2 to 4 weeks, even if the skin looks better, to make sure the fungus is completely gone.

If you forget to apply it, just apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next application, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Do not apply double the amount to make up for it.

• slight peeling or dryness of the skin

Avoid using other strong skin creams or ointments (like those containing steroids or bleaching agents) on the same area at the same time, as this may cause extra irritation. Do not combine with other salicylic acid products like certain acne creams, as too much salicylic acid can damage the skin.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it in places like inside your car or near a window. Keep the lid tightly closed and store away from children.
