Adults usually start with 1 mg once daily, then the doctor gradually increases the dose to 5-15 mg daily, split into 3 doses taken with meals. Take it with food to reduce stomach upset. Swallow the tablet with water. Do not suddenly stop taking this drug without your doctor's advice — the dose should be reduced slowly. Common brands in Nigeria include Axzol, Chexol, and Benzhexol 5 mg Tablets.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for it.
This is a prescription drug — do not buy it from roadside vendors or use someone else's prescription. It can cause drowsiness and blurred vision, so avoid driving okada, keke, or cars until you know how it affects you. Some people misuse this drug for its mind-altering effects — using it without a doctor's supervision is dangerous and can cause serious mental health problems.
Alcohol makes the drowsiness and dizziness from this drug much worse — avoid drinking while on it. Taking it with other drugs that cause drowsiness such as antihistamines (e.g. chlorpheniramine, promethazine) can make you very sleepy. Antacids like magnesium trisilicate may reduce how well the body absorbs this drug, so take them at different times.
