Telmisartan is a blood pressure-lowering drug that works by relaxing your blood vessels so blood can flow more easily, reducing the strain on your heart.

Take one tablet once daily, with or without food, at the same time each day. Most people start with 40 mg once daily, and your doctor may increase it to 80 mg if your blood pressure is still not well controlled. Swallow the tablet whole with water — do not crush or chew it. Common brands in Nigeria include Afritel 40, Angitel, Arbitel, Hytan, and Ladzitel.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take two tablets at once to make up for it.
Do not stop taking this medicine on your own because you feel fine — high blood pressure often has no symptoms, but stopping suddenly can be dangerous. Buy only from licensed pharmacies and check the NAFDAC number on the pack. Do not share your blood pressure medicine with others even if they have similar symptoms — dosage must be prescribed individually.
Avoid taking telmisartan with potassium supplements or salt substitutes that contain potassium, as this can cause dangerously high potassium levels. Be careful if you also take painkillers like ibuprofen or diclofenac regularly, as they can reduce the effect of telmisartan and harm your kidneys. Alcohol can increase the blood pressure-lowering effect and make you feel very dizzy, so limit your intake.
