Who is this for?

Phenylephrine hydrochloride is a decongestant that works by narrowing the blood vessels in your nose and sinuses to reduce swelling and open up blocked airways so you can breathe more easily.

Activates α1-adrenergic receptors on nasal blood vessels, causing vasoconstriction and reducing mucosal edema to relieve nasal congestion. This sympathomimetic action decreases blood flow to nasal tissues, allowing improved airflow through congested passages.

Is Phenylephrine safe to take with another drug?

For adults, the usual dose is 10 mg (one tablet) every 4 to 6 hours as needed, but do not take more than 4 doses (40 mg) in 24 hours. You can take it with or without food. It is usually used for short-term relief — do not use continuously for more than 7 days without seeing a doctor.

Since this medicine is usually taken only when you have symptoms, there is no strict schedule. If you forget a dose, simply take it when you remember, but do not double up. Make sure you wait at least 4 hours before taking another dose.

Do not take with MAO inhibitor drugs (some medicines used for depression) as this combination can cause a dangerous spike in blood pressure. Avoid combining with other decongestants or cold medicines that already contain phenylephrine to prevent overdose. Limit or avoid alcohol as it can worsen dizziness and drowsiness.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it on windowsills or in your car. Keep the container tightly closed to protect from humidity and always keep it out of reach of children.
