Who is this for?

Mirtazapine is an antidepressant that works by increasing the levels of certain natural chemicals in the brain (serotonin and noradrenaline) that help improve your mood, appetite, and sleep.

Blocks presynaptic alpha-2 adrenergic receptors and H1 histamine receptors while antagonizing 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 serotonin receptors, resulting in increased noradrenaline and serotonin release and enhanced monoaminergic neurotransmission. This mechanism improves mood, reduces anxiety, and promotes sleep in depressive disorders.

Is Mirtazapine safe to take with another drug?

Adults usually start with one 15 mg tablet taken once daily at bedtime, since it can make you very sleepy. Your doctor may gradually increase the dose to 30 mg or 45 mg depending on how you respond. Swallow the tablet whole with water — it can be taken with or without food. Do not stop taking it suddenly without your doctor's advice, even if you feel better.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for it.

Avoid alcohol completely as it can dangerously increase drowsiness and slow your breathing. Do not take it with tramadol or other antidepressants like amitriptyline without your doctor's guidance, as the combination can cause a dangerous condition called serotonin syndrome (high fever, confusion, fast heartbeat). Sedatives and sleeping pills will make the drowsiness much worse.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it in your car or near a window. Keep it in its original packaging and far out of reach of children.
