How it works

Inhibits bacterial DNA synthesis by intercalating into DNA and disrupting nucleic acid metabolism, while binding to fungal sterol 14α-demethylase to disrupt ergosterol synthesis and compromise fungal cell membrane integrity.

How to take this drug

Insert one vaginal tablet deep into the vagina at bedtime, usually once daily for 7 to 10 days depending on your doctor's instruction. Wash your hands before and after insertion. Lie down after inserting to prevent the tablet from falling out. Do not swallow this tablet — it is meant only for the vagina.

What if I Miss a Dose?

If you forget to insert the tablet at bedtime, put it in as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not use two tablets at once to make up for a missed dose.

What to watch out for

Complete the full course even if the discharge or itching stops early — stopping too soon can bring the infection back. Do not buy vaginal tablets from roadside vendors or open markets where storage conditions are poor. Avoid sexual intercourse during treatment, and your partner may also need to be treated to prevent the infection from coming back.

Avoid drinking alcohol while using this medication — metronidazole and alcohol together can cause serious nausea, vomiting, and stomach pain. If you are using blood thinners like warfarin, let your doctor know as metronidazole can increase their effect. Avoid using other vaginal creams or tablets at the same time unless your doctor says so.

Do not use this drug during pregnancy, especially in the first three months, or while breastfeeding unless your doctor specifically prescribes it for you.

Who Should NOT Take This

Women who are allergic to metronidazole
clotrimazole
or similar medicines should not use this drug. Women in the first trimester of pregnancy should avoid it. Do not use if you have a history of blood disorders or seizures without consulting a doctor.

How to Store

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it in your car or near a window. Keep the tablets in their original pack until you are ready to use them. Keep away from children.
