Metoprolol is a heart medication that works by slowing down your heart rate and reducing the force of your heartbeat, which helps lower blood pressure and reduces the workload on your heart.

For the regular tablet (tartrate), the usual starting dose is 50mg taken twice daily, which your doctor may increase up to 100-200mg twice daily depending on your condition. Take it with or just after food to help your body absorb it better. For extended-release tablets like Betaloc ZOK, take once daily — swallow whole, do not crush or chew. Your doctor will start you on a low dose and gradually increase it.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember — but if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Never take two doses at once to make up for it. Do not stop taking metoprolol suddenly without talking to your doctor, as this can cause dangerous increases in heart rate and blood pressure.
Do not stop taking metoprolol suddenly — stopping abruptly can cause a dangerous spike in blood pressure or trigger a heart attack. Always buy from a licensed pharmacy and check for NAFDAC registration number on the pack; avoid roadside sellers or unregistered market medicines. Avoid drinking alcohol while taking metoprolol as it can make your blood pressure drop too low and increase dizziness. If you use medications for diabetes like glibenclamide or insulin, metoprolol can hide the warning signs of low blood sugar (like fast heartbeat), so monitor your sugar levels closely.
