Methylphenidate (sold as Ritalin in Nigeria) is a stimulant medicine that works by increasing certain natural chemicals in the brain to help improve focus, attention, and self-control.
Inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine and dopamine at the presynaptic neuron, increasing their synaptic concentration and enhancing catecholaminergic neurotransmission in the central nervous system. This potentiation of monoaminergic activity improves attention, reduces impulsivity, and promotes wakefulness.

For adults, the usual starting dose is one 10 mg tablet taken 2 to 3 times a day, 30 to 45 minutes before meals. Your doctor will adjust the dose based on how you respond. Take it in the morning and afternoon — avoid taking it late in the evening as it can stop you from sleeping. Swallow the tablet with water.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember — but if it is already late afternoon or evening, skip it and take your next dose at the normal time. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one, as this can cause serious side effects.
