Progestin (Hormone)
Last reviewed June 2026
Who is this for?
Hydroxyprogesterone caproate is a man-made form of progesterone, a natural hormone that helps prepare and maintain the womb during pregnancy — it works by mimicking this hormone to support the pregnancy and prevent premature birth.
Binds to progesterone receptors in the uterus and hypothalamus, suppressing uterine contractions and inhibiting the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone to prevent preterm labor. Additionally, alters endometrial development and cervical mucus viscosity to regulate menstrual cycles and support early pregnancy maintenance.

This is not a tablet — it is given as an injection into the muscle (usually the buttocks or upper thigh) by a healthcare provider. For preventing preterm birth, it is typically given as 250 mg once a week starting between weeks 16-20 of pregnancy and continuing until week 37 or delivery. You must go to your hospital or clinic each week for the injection.
If you miss your weekly injection appointment, contact your doctor or go to the clinic as soon as possible to reschedule. Do not try to double up on doses — just get the next injection as quickly as you can and continue your regular weekly schedule.
This injection must be given by a trained healthcare worker at a hospital or clinic — never try to inject yourself at home unless specifically trained. Only use this drug if prescribed by your doctor; do not buy from roadside sellers or unregistered pharmacies. If you notice any unusual swelling, bleeding, or shortness of breath, go to the hospital immediately.
Some diabetes medications may need dose adjustment because this drug can affect blood sugar levels. Certain drugs that affect the liver (like some epilepsy medications such as carbamazepine) may reduce its effectiveness. Always tell your doctor about every medication, herb, or supplement you are taking.
