Who is this for?
Hydroxychloroquine is a drug that works by calming down your immune system (your body's defense system) and reducing inflammation. It was originally developed from antimalarial medicines but is now mainly used for autoimmune conditions where the body mistakenly attacks itself.
Inhibits toll-like receptor signaling and reduces antigen presentation to T lymphocytes, suppressing autoimmune activation and inflammatory cytokine production. Additionally accumulates in parasitic vacuoles and inhibits heme polymerization, disrupting parasite DNA replication and protein synthesis.

For lupus or rheumatoid arthritis, the usual adult dose is 200 mg to 400 mg daily (one to two tablets of HCQS 200 mg). Take it with food or a glass of milk to reduce stomach upset. Your doctor will tell you the exact dose — this is a long-term medication, so take it every day as prescribed, even when you feel fine.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take two tablets at once to make up for it.
This is a prescription medicine — do not self-medicate or buy from roadside sellers, as fake versions exist in Nigeria. You will need regular eye checkups (at least once a year) while taking this drug long-term, because it can damage your eyes over time. Do not share your medication with others, even if they have similar symptoms.
Avoid taking it with antacids or kaolin (stomach medicines) at the same time — wait at least 4 hours apart. Be careful if you are also taking heart medicines like digoxin, as hydroxychloroquine can increase its effects dangerously. Alcohol can worsen liver side effects, so reduce or avoid drinking while on this drug.
