Corticosteroid and Antibiotic combination (topical)
Brand of Hydrocortisone; Gentamicin
Last reviewed June 2026
Who is this for?
This is a combination cream containing hydrocortisone (a steroid that reduces swelling, redness, and itching) and gentamicin (an antibiotic that kills bacteria). It works by treating skin infections while also calming inflammation at the same time.
Binds to glucocorticoid receptors to suppress inflammatory cytokine production and immune cell infiltration, while gentamicin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, providing dual anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial action against infected skin lesions.

Apply a thin layer of the cream to the affected skin area 2 to 3 times daily. Gently rub it in and wash your hands after applying unless you are treating your hands. Do not cover the area with a tight bandage unless your doctor tells you to. Usually used for 7 to 14 days — do not use for longer without a doctor's advice.
If you forget to apply the cream, apply it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next application, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Do not apply double the amount to make up for a missed dose.
Important for antibiotics
Always complete the full course even if you feel better. Stopping early can cause the infection to return and become drug-resistant.
Do not use this cream for longer than your doctor recommended — using steroid creams for too long can thin your skin and cause permanent damage. Buy only from reputable pharmacies and look for known brands like Drugent-HC Cream, not unbranded products from roadside sellers. Do not share this cream with others even if they have similar skin problems, as the wrong use of antibiotics can cause resistance.
Avoid using other steroid creams or medicated skin products on the same area at the same time unless your doctor says so. If you are using other antibiotic creams or ointments, tell your doctor to avoid overloading your skin. Oral steroids like prednisolone taken together with this cream may increase steroid side effects.
