Corticosteroid and Long-Acting Bronchodilator combination (Asthma preventer inhaler)
Brand of Formoterol Fumarate Dihydrate; Budesonide
Last reviewed June 2026
Who is this for?
This is a combination inhaler containing two medicines — budesonide (a steroid that reduces swelling in the airways) and formoterol (a bronchodilator that opens up the airways to make breathing easier). Together, they help control and prevent breathing problems.
Activates beta-2 adrenergic receptors on bronchial smooth muscle, causing bronchodilation and increased airway patency, while simultaneously binding to glucocorticoid receptors to suppress inflammatory cytokine production, reduce airway edema, and inhibit eosinophil recruitment in the respiratory tract.

This medicine comes as a dry powder inhaler (like Fortide DPI). For adults, the usual dose is 1-2 puffs twice daily (morning and evening). Inhale the powder deeply into your lungs, then hold your breath for about 10 seconds. Rinse your mouth with water after each use to prevent mouth infections. Do not swallow the rinse water.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for it.
Always buy your inhaler from a licensed pharmacy — avoid roadside sellers or unregistered shops, as fake inhalers are common and can be dangerous. Do not stop using this medicine suddenly even if you feel better, as your symptoms can come back worse. Always carry your separate reliever inhaler (like salbutamol) for emergency breathing problems.
Avoid using with beta-blocker medicines (like atenolol or propranolol used for high blood pressure) as they can block the breathing effect. Be cautious if you are taking ketoconazole or itraconazole (antifungal medicines) as they can increase side effects of budesonide. Alcohol does not directly interact, but it can worsen some side effects like dizziness.

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so do not leave it in your car or near a window. Keep the inhaler cap closed when not in use to protect it from humidity. Keep out of reach of children.
