Usually you start with one 20 mg capsule once a day, taken in the morning. You can take it with or without food, but taking it with food may reduce stomach upset. Your doctor may increase the dose over time, but do not change the dose yourself. It may take 2 to 4 weeks before you start feeling better, so do not stop taking it because you think it is not working.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue your normal schedule. Do not take two capsules at once to make up for a missed dose.
This is a prescription medicine — do not buy it from roadside sellers or take it because someone recommended it; you need a proper doctor's assessment first. Do not suddenly stop taking fluoxetine on your own as it can cause withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, anxiety, and irritability — your doctor should gradually reduce your dose. Do not share this medicine with others even if they seem to have similar symptoms, as it can be dangerous for them.
Do not take fluoxetine with MAO inhibitor drugs (sometimes used for depression or Parkinson's disease) — the combination can be life-threatening. Avoid mixing with tramadol or other strong painkillers as it can cause a dangerous condition called serotonin syndrome (symptoms include confusion, fast heartbeat, and muscle twitching). Avoid alcohol while taking fluoxetine as it can worsen drowsiness and affect your mood.
