Who is this for?
Ferrous iron is an iron supplement that helps your body make more red blood cells and hemoglobin, which carry oxygen around your body to keep you strong and healthy.
Replenishes depleted iron stores by providing ferrous iron (Fe²⁺) that is absorbed in the duodenum and proximal jejunum, where it binds to transferrin for transport to bone marrow erythroid precursors and incorporation into haemoglobin synthesis. This restores oxygen-carrying capacity and corrects iron deficiency anaemia.

Adults usually take 1 tablet (200mg of ferrous sulphate or equivalent) 2-3 times a day. Take it on an empty stomach about 1 hour before food for best absorption, but if it upsets your stomach, you can take it with a small meal. Swallow with a full glass of water. Taking it with orange juice or vitamin C helps your body absorb the iron better.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. But if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue as normal. Do not take two doses at once to make up for it.
Buy from reputable pharmacies — brands like Ferrodan Capsules are well known in Nigeria, so avoid unmarked or repackaged iron tablets from roadside sellers. Do not take more than the recommended dose thinking it will work faster — too much iron is toxic. If your symptoms do not improve after a few weeks, see your doctor for a proper blood test.
Do not take iron tablets together with tetracycline or ciprofloxacin antibiotics — space them at least 2 hours apart, as iron reduces how well these drugs work. Antacids and calcium supplements also reduce iron absorption, so take them at different times. Tea, coffee, and milk can block iron absorption — avoid drinking them within 1-2 hours of taking your iron tablet.

Is it safe to take Ferrous with your other drugs?
Ferrous iron is generally safe and commonly recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding to prevent anaemia, but always take it under your doctor's or midwife's guidance.
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat — Nigerian weather can be very hot, so avoid leaving it near windows or in your car. Keep the container tightly closed to protect from humidity. Keep far away from children as iron overdose in children can be very dangerous.
