Who is this for?
Ethanol (alcohol) is a chemical substance that, when used medically, works as an antiseptic to kill germs on the skin and surfaces, or as an antidote for certain types of poisoning.
Denatures bacterial proteins and lipids through coagulation, disrupting cell membrane integrity and microbial viability for antiseptic effects. In methanol and ethylene glycol poisoning, competitively inhibits alcohol dehydrogenase enzyme, preventing conversion of toxic metabolites (formaldehyde and glycolaldehyde) while allowing renal excretion of the parent compounds.

Ethanol is not typically taken as a regular medicine by mouth. For skin cleaning and disinfection, apply methylated spirit (like MGZ or Magzo Methylated Spirit) directly on the skin using cotton wool. For poisoning treatment, ethanol is given strictly by a doctor in a hospital — never try to treat poisoning yourself at home.
Since ethanol is mostly used as a skin disinfectant and not taken on a schedule, missed doses are not usually a concern. If it is being given in a hospital for poisoning, the doctors will manage the dosing for you.
Methylated spirit (like MGZ and Magzo brands) is strictly for external use only — never drink it or use it as a substitute for drinking alcohol, as some people in Nigeria dangerously do. Keep it far from fire, stoves, and candles because it catches fire very easily. Buy only from reputable pharmacies or stores — avoid repackaged or unlabeled bottles from roadside sellers as they may contain dangerous impurities.
Do not apply methylated spirit near or on areas where you are using medicated creams or ointments as it may reduce their effectiveness. Drinking alcohol while taking medications like metronidazole (flagyl), paracetamol, or sedatives is very dangerous and can cause severe reactions or liver damage.

Is it safe to take Ethanol with your other drugs?
Pregnant and breastfeeding women can use methylated spirit on the skin for cleaning, but should never drink ethanol or any alcohol as it can seriously harm the unborn baby or nursing child.
Store methylated spirit in a tightly closed container, away from heat, fire, and direct sunlight — it is highly flammable. Keep far away from children, as swallowing it can be deadly. Store in a cool, dry place away from cooking areas and naked flames.
