Methylated spirit is a mixture of ethanol (drinking-type alcohol) and methanol (wood naptha, a poisonous alcohol) along with a purple dye, designed strictly for external use only. It works by killing germs (bacteria and fungi) on the skin and is also used as a cooling and drying agent.
Denatures bacterial and fungal proteins through disruption of lipid membranes and coagulation of cytoplasmic contents, exerting rapid antimicrobial activity; additionally promotes heat dissipation through evaporative cooling when applied to skin surfaces.
Cleaning wounds and skin before injections, disinfecting surfaces and medical equipment, relieving muscle aches when rubbed on the skin, drying out skin rashes and sores, cooling the body during high fever (when dabbed on the skin)

Never drink methylated spirit under any circumstance, as some people in Nigeria mix it with beverages which can cause blindness and death. Keep it far away from fire, kerosene stoves, and candles because it is extremely flammable. Buy only from reputable pharmacies or stores and check that the seal is intact to avoid adulterated products.
Do not apply methylated spirit on skin immediately before or after using medicated creams or ointments as it may affect their absorption or cause irritation. Avoid combining with other alcohol-based skin products on the same area to prevent excessive drying or chemical burns.
